Makiko Ueno, Senior Adviser

Makiko Ueno is a Senior Adviser at the Global Policy Initiative. She is also a Professor of the School of Policy Studies at Kwansei Gakuin University in Sanda, Japan. Prior to the current position, she held several academic positions, including Designated Professor of the Graduate School of Engineering at Osaka University, Professor of the Graduate School of International Public Policy at Osaka University, and Adjunct Professor at the Union Institute & University, Graduate College. From 1986 to 2003 she was a Research Associate at the Urban Institute in Washington, D.C. Prof. Ueno first introduced U.S. housing policy research and evaluation to Japanese housing study. Since then her areas of research interest have expanded to policy analysis/evaluation, a nonprofit sector, independent think tanks, and civil societies. Her major publications include Think Tanks in a Democratic Society: An Alternative Voice (edited with Jeffrey P. Telgarsky, 1996; Japanese edition, with Naoto Yamauchi, 2007). She holds a doctorate degree in engineering from the University of Tokyo.
